Parent Updates
Practice Schedule
Now that the season has officially begun, there will be daily practices.
Mondays through Friday 3:30 until at least 5:30 p.m.
Saturday 9 a.m. to 11a.m.
(Wrestlers coming from Football will begin practicing with the team
on November 19)
Under CIF rules, Wrestlers who did not make grades (2.0 or higher) this quarter are not able to participate with the team in any way. They cannot practice after school, cannot compete in duals and cannot be sent to tournaments representing CHS.
If they are in 4th period PE class, they will be given general conditioning and fitness assignments as well as general work to be done to support and maintain the team and the mat room. In this way they still will receive credit for PE.
“Scrimmage” dual Friday with La Sierra
This Friday, November 14, there will be a dual 5 p.m. at La Sierra. The school considers this a pre-season dual so wrestlers will need to have their own transportation. If you can drive members of the team, please let Coach Hill know and he’ll tell you when to meet at the school (around 4 p.m.)
Red and Gold Banquet
5:30 p.m. December 2nd
There will be a door charge of $5 that will include dinner.
This will be when the kids “Wrestle off” for spots on Varsity and Junior Varsity in each weight classification. Everyone who wants to compete for a spot on Varsity or Junior Varsity needs to attend.
We still need 6 more parent volunteers to assist during the evening with preparing and serving food. If you can assist, e-mail our Booster secretary, Teri Sanchez at cpwrestling08@yahoo.com and plan to arrive by 5 p.m.
The remainder of the Spirit Packs will be distributed and Team singlets will be checked out to the wrestlers at the end of the evening.
Spirit Pack Clothing
If your wrestler has not yet purchased a spirit pack, please do so by the Red and Gold Banquet. If you are not able to purchase the $100 package, we will make one pair of shorts and a hoodie available for $30. It is important that all Varsity and Junior Varsity wrestlers have appropriate clothing before the first dual on December 4.
For those who have purchased spirit packs, your remaining items will be distributed to you at the Red and Gold banquet.
If you do not purchase these items, be sure your wrestler has the following clothing for the duals and tournaments:
Freshman and Junior Varsity—gold shorts, a Corona wrestling T-shirt of some kind (red, gold or white), a red pullover hooded sweatshirt.
Varsity—white shorts, a Corona wrestling T-shirt (red, gold or white) and a red pull over hooded sweatshirt.
Thanksgiving weekend
As always, the team will have practices over the Thanksgiving weekend. Coach Hill is still working out the specifics, but plan on an early morning practice on Thanksgiving Day, a practice on Friday morning the day after Thanksgiving, and then there is a Junior Varsity tournament at La Sierra on Saturday November 29.
Christmas Break
Practices will be held each weekday during Christmas break. Typically the coaches give offer two practices each day and ask wrestlers to attend one or the other—early morning or later afternoon. Watch for more details on exact times. Check the tournament schedule for this timeframe as well. There is a Varsity tournament on January 2 and 3 and a freshman dual on January 3.
Christmas Tree Distribution
After school on Friday, December 12, Coach will have the wrestlers assist with unloading the trees when they are delivered.
On Saturday, December 13, parents and their students are needed to work at the tree distribution. Folks are needed beginning at 8 a.m. and could be needed through clean up at 3 p.m.
Parents, if you have twine that could be used tying the trees down to cars, please being it along as well as any heavy duty scissors or other tools that may come in handy. Note—only parents should arrive with tools… NOT students. Please sign up at the Red and Gold banquet or email through the website let us know what time you can be there.
Home Dual Season passes
We are offering a season pass good for all home wrestling duals. For $20 you will get a punch card for entry into each of the duals we host at Corona High School this season. (Must have the card with you when you arrive to receive entry). For $20 you get the card and a T-shirt. This is an easy way for friends and family to support the team and get people out to watch the matches. The cards will be available for purchase at the Red and Gold banquet on December 2nd.
General reminders:
- The school provides transportation for the team members to duals and any tournaments that take place on Fridays. Many of the Varsity tournaments, however, go on for two days (Friday/Saturday). Coach Hill is working on getting van transportation for the second day of the tournaments—stay tuned on that.
- If your wrestler participates in an individual tournament on a Friday and finishes early, you may transport him/her home before the end of the tournament that day. However, coach wants all Varsity wrestlers to plan to return on the second day of the tournament—even if they are not wrestling—to watch the final matches and support their team members.
PREVENTING INFECTIONS
For wrestling parents, words such as Ringworm, Impetigo and MRSA (Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus Aureus) are now key on our list of “things to watch out for.”
Each of these can be spread through skin-to-skin contact and at locations where close contact with others is common, including gyms, schools, and athletic facilities.
Ringworm is a fungal infection, impetigo an ordinary bacterial infection and MRSA is an extremely dangerous bacterial infection.
To prevent the spread of these conditions, the California Department of Public Health suggests that those at risk:
The coaches have adopted hygiene measures at school and are ensuring that our gym equipment and exercise mats are disinfected with a chlorine bleach solution. Please keep an eye on your student. If you see any suspicious marks, or bumps on their skin, please check with a coach to see if it needs referral to a medical professional. The internet has various sites that can show you pictures of what to look for.
Weight Classes
A full Varsity squad and a full Junior Varsity squad will have a wrestler in each of the following weigh classes. Remember the designated weight means the wrestler cannot weigh any more than that. (There are “weight allowances” for specific times during season that may allow a 1 or 2 lb increase. The coaches always let the team know if there is a weight allowance, but the safest bet is to stay under the number to keep from being disqualified at a match.
